Keeping the heart beating within a specific rhythm range is an important part of getting the most out of exercise, especially for competitive athletes. Runners, bikers, and anyone else doing “dry” sports have a choice of devices that monitor the heartbeat, count steps taken, and calculate calories burned. Swimmers, on the other hand, have been left behind and continue counting laps and estimating their heart rate.
Trying to fill this gap, a new startup out of Lebanon is developing a device that clips to the forehead, just below swimming goggles, to measure the heart’s BPMs, as well as keep track of laps and turns. Chest and arm based monitors work well enough for land athletes, but those would only get in the way of swimmers. The Instabeat device instead gets its readings from the temporal artery and displays the readouts through the goggles for continuous vigilance of one’s performance.
